Take your time before you pay

Choose a public meeting place

Meet in daylight and bring a friend. Calgary police station parking lots have cameras operating around the clock. Tell someone where you are going.

Check the bike

Test the brakes, steering, gears, and tires. Take a short test ride if both people are comfortable with the arrangement.

Agree on test-ride collateral

A seller may ask to hold identification or payment while you ride. That arrangement is between the two of you. Do not hand over anything you are uncomfortable leaving with a stranger.

Check the serial

Ask the seller for the serial number and search it on Bike Index. Walk away if the serial is removed or the story does not make sense.

Avoid payment scams

Never send a deposit for a bike you have not seen. Ignore e-transfer messages that ask you to pay a fee, buy gift cards, or share a verification code.
